Patents provide information that can be used to determine where individuals have worked and track down hidden assets. The USPTO manages the patent process and records. There are three types of patents: utility, design, and plant. Patent applications become public 18 months after filing and can be searched on the PAIR system or in the Patent Search Room. Each state has a library that receives currently issued patents and maintains archives back to 1790.
