Edward Morgan Forster was born in London on January 1, 1879. He was raised by his mother, Alice Clara Whichelo Forster, two paternal aunts and grandmother. His father, an architect by the name of Edmund Morgan, died of consumption in the year 1880. Forster’s childhood was a happy one at Rooksnest, a “large, old, lonely but friendly house” (Edwards 180) in Hertfordshire that his mother rented.
