Earthquakes occur when built-up pressure causes rock underground to suddenly break along a fault line. This sudden release of energy creates seismic waves that make the ground shake. Over time, the rocks continue to push against each other until enough pressure has built up that they break, causing an earthquake. The spot where the rock breaks is called the focus, and the area above the focus is called the epicenter.
