What is Fatigue Failure in Hollow Power Shaft about?
A fatigue crack was discovered in a hollow power transmission shaft during service. Investigation revealed that the crack initiated at the edge of a keyway due to a stress concentration from a depression mark. The crack then propagated in a helical pattern around 3/4 of the shaft circumference due to inadequate radius at the keyway edges and rough machining marks. Analysis found the crack initiated and grew through fatigue at the keyway edge over the shaft
