What is Magellan about?

Ferdinand Magellan departed Spain in 1519 with five ships and 270 men to search for a western passage to the Spice Islands. After resupplying in the Canary Islands, the fleet sailed along the coast of Africa and South America, discovering Rio de Janeiro along the way. In October 1520, they found the passage they sought, later known as the Strait of Magellan.
