Can I read Slavery, Segregation, and Scripture on EtoBox?

Slavery, Segregation, and Scripture by Buswell, James Oliver, III is a nonfiction available to read on EtoBox.

What is Slavery, Segregation, and Scripture about?

During these years of the one-hundredth anniversary of various phases of the Civil War certain outstanding parallels between slavery and racial segregation come to mind. For example, the Negro’s slave status of yesterday find its parallels in modern “caste” and color lines of today, and the social revolution that culminated in the Civil War has itscounterparts in the social revolution of our day that culminated in the Supreme Court ruling against racial segregation in the public schools. The parallels focused upon in the present study arise from the underlying racist position that has been used to support slavery and racial segregation alike. More particularly, thearguments from Scripture and from science will here be discussed.A course on “The Negro in the New World” offered in the Graduate School at Columbia University helped to provide background material for this book. It was the teacher ofthis course. Dr. Charles Wagley, Professor of Anthropology, whose remarks concerning the “slaveholders’ dilemma” (see pp. 26-36), stimulated the train of thought from which thisstudy resulted. To him I am indebted for a valuable overview of the history of the Negro in the Americas.
