What is Marx and Keynes? Marx or Keynes? about?

It is no mystery why 1983 saw a great deal of attention paid to the works of Karl Marx and J. M. Keynes. This attention is in addition to the continuing interest in Marxism and Keynesianism-two bodies of thought not necessarily derivable from the writings of the two economists under whose names they go. The coincidence of Marx having died and Keynes having been born in the same year (1883) piques our interest and, perhaps, suggests that the ancient belief in reincarnation is not entirely gone from our subconscious. We may also briefly note that Keynes and Adam Smith shared the same birthday (June 5). Keynes was, indeed, doubly fortunate in his natal connections. What is more striking and more to the point is that the question of the relation of Keynes's General Theory to Marx's Capital was raised almost immediately upon the appearance of the former volume in 1936. Needless to say, the coincidental birth and death played no part in those discussions and, indeed, went unnoticed at the time.
