Democritus proposed that all matter is made of indivisible tiny particles called atoms in the 5th century BC. John Dalton formalized atomic theory in 1803, proposing that elements are made of atoms and atoms of different elements have different properties. In the early 20th century, Rutherford discovered the nucleus and proposed a nuclear model of the atom.
