The Israelites became impatient waiting for Moses to return from meeting with God. They asked Aaron to make them gods to follow. Aaron made a golden calf idol for them to worship. God saw this and was angry because the Israelites disobeyed the second commandment against making idols. God threatened to destroy them, but Moses pleaded for their forgiveness. God punished the Israelites with a plague for their idol worship.
