Ethiopian highland. A prolongation of the valley is the Red Sea in the northern direction and the Gulf of Aden in north-eastern direction. Many of the Rift Valley lakes are hydrologically interconnected and form two chains of lakes with the altitude above sea level decreasing from north to south: Lake Abaya > Lake Chamo > Lake Chew Bahir > Lake Turkana forming the southern chain. In the past the connection, however, was open only from time to time. At present Chew Bahir is dry. A northern chain is built by the so called Galla Lakes: Lake Ziway > Lake Abijata > Lake Shala. Some other lakes are isolated (e.g. Lake Awasa). The Rift Valley lakes are solutions of sodium bicarbonate and carbonate. Salinity, conductivity and the concentrations of most ions and nutrients are increasing along each chain. Beneath lake morphometry and water chemistry, phytoplankton and primary production was studied together with secondary production of zooplankton. In the Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes phytoplankton growth is mostly light-limited. The number of species decreases with increasing salinity.
