About this document

Energy Efficiency in Desalination Plants by Abdelrahman Awad is a document available to read on EtoBox.

This article evaluates the potential of ultra-permeable membranes (UPMs) for improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of reverse osmosis (RO) desalination. A tripling of membrane permeability could lead to significant reductions in energy consumption (15-46%) and the number of pressure vessels required (44-63%) for seawater and brackish water RO plants. However, the study also notes diminishing returns in energy savings due to thermodynamic limitations and concentration polarization effects.
