Kamilin 1966 respectively; the results of the new excavations at Boghazkoy, Mari, Nimrud, Nippur, Ugarit, Saqqara, and many other sites throughout the Near East which have sometimes cast a direct light on the Bible or have illuminated the biblical background. The author only occasionally makes very brief and superficial reference in her book to a few of these discoveries. But in Palestine, the area with which Kenyon almost exclusively deals in this book, she is thoroughly at home, and it is here that her expertise shines brightly. The basis for the six chapters of this book is the text of four Haskell lectures presented at Oberlin College, Ohio in 1976. These chapters deal in chronological order with the patriarchal period, the time of the entry into Canaan, the period of the Hebrew kings, and of New Testament Palestine. For each period the archaeological evidence and to a lesser degree the literary evidence is also presented. This is accomplished in very succinct form, for her text covers only about 40 of the 105 pages of the book; the remainder of the space is filled by photos.
