What is Where We Stand about?

The years 1904-6 were years of political failure and recidivism in Ireland. Joyce's works of the period accordingly dull the note of 'resurgence'. The subdued mindset was also notable among radical nationalists. It drove both them and the Joyce of Dubliners into producing anatomies of contemporary Irish culture, attempts to clarify the Irish predicament. Both are concerned with a kind of political minimalism, the collection and exhibition of scattered instances of the resistant Irish will. Joyce moves beyond the nationalist position, however, in his radically sceptical practice, digging ironically beneath what now appears to have been a specious positivity, as the chapter shows with particular reference to the account of Irish nationalism and socialism in 'Ivy Day in the Committee Room'.
