The excavations at the Egyptian fortress of Askut in Nubia from 1962-1964 revealed structures from the Middle Kingdom including a triangular walled fortress, storerooms, housing units, and a palace. Some painted panels and architectural features were similar to other Egyptian fortresses in Nubia. Later occupation layers suggested squatters after the Middle Kingdom, possibly C-Group settlers.
