Until very recently it would have been de rigueur for a review such as this one, of two scholarly books about Bob Dylan's lyrics, to begin by anticipating and fending off objections to the very project of analyzing Dylan's poetics. No doubt that review would have cited, by way of precedent, Dylan's Vision of Sin (2003) by Christopher Ricks, the distinguished poetry critic and literary historian. Since 2016, however, thanks to the Swedish Academy, the defense of Dylan's stature as a literary figure has been rendered moot, and Ricks no longer needs to be dragged into the discussion as some kind of magical talisman. Controversial though Dylan's selection was at the time, it is hard to deny that the Nobel Prize in Literature confers literary status on his lyricsif it doesn't, what would?
