An in vitro and in vivo study investigated the anti-inflammatory properties of humates derived from coal. Oral treatment with leonardite humate and prednisilone significantly reduced ear swelling in a contact hypersensitivity rat model. Both humate products dose-dependently inhibited the expression of the CR3 adhesion molecule on activated neutrophils. The leonardite humate showed anti-inflammatory effects comparable to prednisilone without signs of toxicity.
