Agriculture is of paramount importance in India contributing 35% to its National Gross Products. Horticultural crops account for the 18% of the gross value of agricultural output. Among the fruit crops grown banana ranks second and is mostly consumed in domestic market. There is diverse systems of cultivation, with large number of varieties grown in different regions having strong regional preference. Fusarium wilt, banana bunchy-top, leaf spot, and nematode are major constraints in growing banana. There is an urgent need to check the erosion of germoplasm and develop resistant cultivars suitable to the different growing regions. In-vitro breeding can be used as a tool.
