What is Managing Plateau Pressure in Ventilation about?
Plateau pressure is the pressure measured in the small airways and alveoli at the end of inspiration with a brief inspiratory hold. Meta-analyses have shown a correlation between plateau pressures over 35 cm H2O and increased risk of barotrauma. Studies also demonstrate lower mortality rates with plateau pressures under 30 mm Hg compared to under 50 mm Hg. High plateau pressures can be caused by increased tidal volume, PEEP, or flow and may lead to barotrauma and ventilator-associated lung injury. Reducing
