What is The Cavendish Laboratory, 1874-1974 about?

J. G. Crowther's aim in writing this book is to present, both to the scientist and the general reader, a picture of the Cavendish Laboratory over the hundred years since the openings of the first Laboratory in 1874. He traces its evolution from a small building in the heart of Cambridge into the new complex, built on an industrial scale, which opened in 1974. The main feature of the book is the attempt to place the Cavendish in its human and historical context. Although it does not claim to be a detail technical history of the Cavendish researches, the book enables the reader to see what were the conditions in British social and university life which enabled the Laboratory to be created and to flourish, and to identify the kinds of personality and genius which directed it, formed its modes of work and thought, and led to world fame. Mr Crother does not mention everybody who has been connected with the Cavendish, nor even everyone of importance, but focuses attention on those activities and personalities which most strikingly illustrate the nature of the Cavendish.
