This book describes Greece and the Aegean (excluding Macedonia) during the period c. 1125-900 b.c. - a period veiled in obscurity and beset by unsolved problems, but of vital importance. Its early years cover the last flickers of the Mycenaean world; and it is possible to suggest what may have led to the disappearance of the earlier culture. A new culture took its place, and this eventually led to the glories of Archaic and Classical Greece.Unfortunately its importance is not matched by our knowledge of it. The art of writing was apparently lost. For evidence we have to depend on oral tradition or archaeological material; and the latter now provides sufficient basis for an attempt to discuss the period and area as a whole.Mr. Desborough gives Early and Late Dark Age evidence on a regional pattern. He also discusses the various types of evidence - settlements, burial customs, dress ornaments; outside influences; and the oral tradition. He concludes that after a period of stress and insecurity there came a gradual return to relatively peaceful conditions.
