Austenite is a non-magnetic allotrope, or crystalline form, of iron that exists above the critical eutectoid temperature of 1000 K (727°C) in plain-carbon steel. It has a face-centered cubic crystal structure. Austenite can dissolve more carbon than ferrite and transforms to other microstructures like martensite, ferrite, and cementite upon cooling, depending on the rate of cooling.
