In September 1993, the conservative monthly magazine Quadrant published an all-out attack on the work and character of the deceased historian Manning Clark. By the 1990s, attacks on Clark by conservatives were hardly rare. Indeed, Clark's work had been the subject of vehement criticism since Malcolm Ellis characterised Volume I of Clark's A History of Australia as "history without facts" back in 1962. What made the 1993 Quadrant article on Clark extraordinary was that it was written by Clark's former publisher and erstwhile friend, Peter Ryan, who had run Melbourne University Press (MUP) for twenty-five years. During that time, Clark's multi-volume national history had been a mainstay of the press.In this relatively compact but meticulously researched book, Doug Munro presents a searching account of the strange 'Ryan-Clark Controversy'.
