“This book formulates and expounds a version of idealism. This idealism is not of the traditional ontological type, holding that the material objects that all too evidently populate the physical world are only illusory and un-existent as such, being mere “works of the mind” (entia rationis). Rather, this doctrine, characterized as conceptual idealism, holds not just the trivial thesis that mind is at work in our conceiving of reality, but the more significant and daring doctrine that mind underlies our conception of reality. Beginning with the contention of traditional rationalism that the mind makes a substantive and formative contribution to our concept of nature, conceptual idealism goes beyond this to hold that the mind makes this formative contribution in terms that to some extent involve a reference to itself. It is accordingly maintained that natural objects as we conceive of them (and not necessarily as they may be “in themselves” – whatever that might be) are in certain fundamental respects conceived of in terms whose adequate analysis and explication calls for a reference to minds and their capabilities.
