Cleaning and disinfecting a water holding tank is necessary to remove algae, silt, and bacteria, and should be done at least once a year by emptying the tank, scrubbing the interior walls, rinsing, mixing a bleach solution, scrubbing again and leaving it to sit before rinsing with clean water and refilling. For tanks not accessible for cleaning, bleach should be added to the full tank and left for 12 hours before draining and refilling. Strict safety precautions must be followed when cleaning confined space
