There is hope that the US and Russia can extend the New START nuclear arms treaty before it expires in February. Russia proposed extending it by one year while freezing the number of nuclear warheads held by each side. The US welcomed this offer and said it was prepared to immediately finalize an agreement. Extending the last remaining nuclear arms pact between the two countries could help prevent an uncontrolled arms race.
