While Republic ambassadors went to peace talks on Alderaan, the Imperial fleet attacked Coruscant itself. The fall of the Republic capital broke the spirit of the Republic. The Empire has now secured its seized territory while the Republic rebuilds in preparation for renewed conflict, marking the beginning of the Cold War era.
