What is Itensity Modulated Irradiation of Nasopharynx Carcinoma with Inclusion of Cervical and Supraclavicular Lymph Nodes about?
Purpnse/Objective: To evaluate potential benefits of intensity modulated beams (IMB) in the irradiation of nasopharynx tumors with inclusion of cervical and supraclavicalar lymph nodes. The primary goal was to develop a new approach for the treatment of head and neck patients which would substantially reduce the doses to the sensitive structures such as the optic chiasm, optic nerves, parotid glands, spinal cord, and brainstem, etc., and significantly simplify the current treatment procedure that uses two opposed lateral photon fields to treat the nasopharynx, electron fields to treat the posterior neck nodes, and an abutted anterior (or an anterior and a posterior) photon field(s) to treat the supraclavicular region. The IMRT plan consisted of a primary treatment followed by a photon boost to replace the conventional off-cord boost of the tumor site that usually employs two pairs of abutting electron and photon fields.
