What is Development Policy and Administration (Readings in Indian Government and Politics series) about?

The first in an important new series, Development Policy and Administration brings together a set of important essays that combine policy perspectives with analyses of the implementation of development plans in India as well as institutional performance. This volume emphasizes the necessity of locating administration within a broader socio-political and economic context, highlighting the fact that public administration in India is embedded in the larger context of society, state, and public policy. Each chapter is a major contribution to its own area and, read together, the collection provides a clear understanding of the emerging concerns in public administration. While covering a wide range of relevant and important issues—including the state and development planning, bureaucracy, and the policy apparatus—chapters also analyze the role of international agencies, panchayats, cooperatives, and nongovernmental organizations in meeting the needs of the people.
Providing important conceptual insights into a range of issues, this volume offers essential reading for researchers and graduate-level students in the areas of public policy, political science, and administration.
