Thetis was a goddess of water who was the mother of Achilles. She was the granddaughter of Poseidon and was raised by Hera. Thetis married the mortal Peleus and they had Achilles. To make Achilles invulnerable in battle, Thetis dipped the infant Achilles in the River Styx, holding him by his heel which was not touched by the water, leaving it as his one vulnerable spot.
