Paranaque was originally part of Rizal province until 1975 when it became part of the National Capital Region by presidential decree. The city gets its name from the Tagalog word "palanyag", meaning a place where people gather. The main industries are farming, fishing, and livestock and poultry. Notable attractions include Baclaran Church, a bird sanctuary, Solaire Resort & Casino, The Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew, and Dampa Festival held in February and religious festivals in October and Easter Sunday.
