There are several types of insulin used to treat diabetes, categorized by how quickly they work after injection. Very fast-acting insulins like Humalog and Novolog start working within 10 minutes and last 3-4 hours. Regular or rapid-acting insulin starts within 30 minutes, peaks at 3-5 hours, and lasts 6-10 hours. Intermediate-acting NPH and Lente insulins start within 1 hour, peak at 6-12 hours, and last 20-24 hours. Long-acting Ultralente and Glargine start working 1-8 hours after injection and last 18-24
