What is Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III about?

The Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III commemorates the deeds of the Assyrian king Shalmaneser III. It depicts kings from neighboring regions bringing tribute to Shalmaneser. The second register is thought to depict Jehu, king of Israel, bringing tribute, which would make it the earliest known depiction of a biblical figure. Some scholars question whether it actually depicts Jehu. It was discovered in 1846 and provides historical information about the Assyrian Empire in the 9th century BC.
