Matthew Arnold was a 19th century British poet and cultural critic. He worked as an inspector of schools after graduating from Oxford University. Some of his notable works include the poems "Dover Beach" and "The Scholar Gipsy" as well as books on literary, social and religious criticism such as Culture and Anarchy and Literature and Dogma. He is considered one of the major Victorian poets and is known for his thoughtful reflections on contemporary social issues in both his poetry and prose.
