Breathing is the process of taking in oxygen-rich air and expelling carbon dioxide-rich air. During inhalation, intercostal muscles and the diaphragm contract, increasing chest cavity volume and decreasing air pressure, allowing air to rush into the lungs. In exhalation, these muscles relax, decreasing chest cavity volume and increasing air pressure, causing air to be expelled from the lungs.
