These three volumes include over forty contributions originally presented at the December 2013 international conference on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Council of Trent hosted at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. A dozen pieces are in French, three are in German, and the remainder in are English, written by an international body of scholars that include historians, historical theologians, art historians, and historical musicologists. The first volume offers several overview essays plus case studies exploring issues pertaining to scripture, theology, and pastoral care as well as the council's relationship to intra-Catholic contestation and Protestant traditions. Volume 2 investigates the diverse relationships between changes in Catholic religious life and political authorities, including specific explorations of the dioceses of Cathagena, Namur, Ragusa, and Olomouc. The third volume concentrates on particular examples of the ways in which the Council of Trent affected (or did not affect) art, architecture, and music; it also discusses post-Tridentine global Catholicism with reference to the very different contexts of Japan, Peru, and Ethiopia.
