Scientists have developed techniques to measure stratospheric ozone depletion using Dobson spectrometers and balloon-borne ozonesondes. G.M.B Dobson invented the Dobson spectrometer in the 1920s to measure ozone concentrations in the atmosphere by analyzing ratios of UV radiation. NOAA scientists have since used ozonesondes, which measure ozone levels as the balloons ascend, to study the Antarctic ozone hole.
