Johann Sebastian Bach wrote four Kyrie-Gloria masses between 1738-1739 consisting of the first two movements of the mass ordinary. Known as the Missae breves, each mass is composed of six movements - a single choral Kyrie movement and five Gloria movements, some of which are arias. Bach derived most of the music through parodying existing cantata movements, making some adjustments to fit the Latin text. The masses may have been intended for liturgical use or for performances by Count Franz Anton von Sporck.
