What is The Fasciculus Solitarius and Its Connections in Amphibians and Fishes about?
Most of the tracts in the brains of urodele amphibians are loosely organized mixed bundles of fibers of diverse origin and function. Their individual fibers, moreover, frequently have numberless collateral connections, so that the tracts are not physiologically specific as regards either the sources of their fibers or their terminal connections. The lemniscus systems, for instance, lack the functional specificity which characterizes them in mammals. I n urodeles there are three of these systems which I have named the spinal lemniscus complex, the general bulbar lemniscus, and tractus bulbo-tectalis lateralis. These can be defined descriptively in terms of their connections with broad fields of origin or termination, but each of their fibers may be activated from any or all of several peripheral sense organs of quite different modality. The cranial nerves have been analyzed into functional systems, each of which is composed of fibers connected with peripheral organs of similar typegeneral cutaneous, organs of the lateral line, vestibular, and so on. This analysis is not complete, but the sensory systems so far distinguishable anatomically are as specific physiologically in salamande
