This study investigated EBV-specific immune responses in 164 subjects including 108 MS patients and controls. It found that the frequency of EBV-specific CD8+ T cells producing IFN-γ was significantly higher in patients with clinically isolated syndrome compared to later MS stages and controls, and decreased over time. In contrast, there were no differences in CMV-specific or EBV-specific CD4+ T cell responses between groups. This supports an association between EBV and early MS.
