The table summarizes ranges of standard penetration test (SPT) N-values and the corresponding cohesion for intermediate soils. Soils with an SPT N-value greater than 30 are considered dense with a cohesion of around 48 kPa. Medium dense soils have an SPT N-value between 10-30 and a cohesion of 5-48 kPa. Soils with an SPT N-value less than 10 are loose with a cohesion of around 5 kPa. The data is from research conducted by Karol in 1960.
