What is Hard times, hard bread, and harder coffee : the Civil War correspondence of Hezekiah Long, Company F, 20th Maine Infantry about?
"When President Lincoln issued his call in 1862 for 300,00 more troops, thirty-seven year old Hezekiah Long was among those to volunteer. He enlisted in September of 1862 as a private in the 20th Maine Infantry Regiment. In them he recounts his wartime experiences and chronicles the major campaigns of the 20th Maine. On a more personal level, he writes home about poor food, late pay, the weather, poor living conditions, disease, and his recurring battle with rheumatism"--Page 4 of cover
