Dr. Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal Alonzo y Realonda was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, and baptized three days later. His parents, Don Francisco Mercado and Doña Teodora Alonso Realonda, had eleven children, with Rizal being the youngest. The family adopted the surname Rizal, which was conferred by a Spanish governor, while their original surname was Mercado, adopted in 1731.
