Cleopatra was not Egyptian but was descended from a Greek general. When her brother Ptolemy XIII became king at age 11, she was 18 and needed to gain control of Egypt from him. She convinced Roman general Julius Caesar to support her by killing her brother. Later, after being defeated by Augustus, Cleopatra committed suicide rather than be humiliated by being brought to Rome.
