Walter Lionel George (20 March 1882, Paris, France – 30 January 1926) was an English writer, chiefly known for his popular fiction, which included feminist, pacifist, and pro-labour themes.A post-catastrophe dystopia remarkable for its anti-sentimental attitude towards children. After a tidal wave obliterates a small coastal town in Venezuela, some of the surviving children are shipped out, but these ships in turn founder. Some children make it to a deserted island. The novel follows their progress growing up without adult supervision and observing their mishaps and mayhem with a somber tone. The theme of the sinister child became a fictional staple in the second half of the 20th century, but it represented a rather bold innovation in 1927.
