and smartphone digital phenotyping to test whether diminished vmPFC safety signaling is associated with pervasively elevated distress. Methods: We used multiband fMRI and a genuinely distressing threat-anticipation paradigm to create a composite measure of vmPFC safety signaling (Safety>Threat) in a large university sample enriched for internalizing risk (N1⁄4208; M1⁄418.8 years). Smartphone surveys were used to intensively sample real-world distress (>10,000 momentary assessments). Hierarchical linear modeling was used to fuse the datastreams. Results: The vmPFC showed robust safety-related activation (q<.05, corrected), and individuals showing diminished vmPFC activation experienced elevated levels of context-independent distress in their daily lives (p1⁄4.015). This brain-behavior association was driven by increased safety processing in the subcallosal cortex and rostral gyrus (ps<.03) and remained significant when context-independent distress was fractionated into depressive (p:1⁄4.004)dbut not anxious (trend; p1⁄4.055)dnegative affect. vmPFC activation was unrelated to stressor-induced distress. Conclusions: Maladaptive fear and anxiety are a leading cause of human suffering, u
