Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He grew up on the frontier in Kentucky and Indiana, where his family experienced financial difficulties and his mother died when he was young. As a young man, Lincoln moved to Illinois, where he worked various jobs and became involved in local politics. He briefly went to New Orleans on a flatboat trip, witnessing slavery firsthand. Lincoln settled in New Salem, Illinois, where he would remain for the next six years.
