What is On a Statistical Approach to Brittle Rupture for Multiaxial States of Stress about?
AMrae&--According to Griffith's theory and Weibull's statistical approach, a two-parameter strength distribution function is obtained, valid for any state of stress, that gives a probabilistic explanation of the influence of the intermediate principle stress on the phenomenon of rupture in brittle materials. The study is proposed as a contribution towards a general probabilistic criterion of rupture. 'Ihe analysis is limited to the state of initial fracturing which coincides, practically, with the macroscopic failure for tensile stresses, whereas for stresses of prevalent compression it may be regarded as the onset of a damage process which constitutes a starting point for any fnrther analysis of the material behaviour at rupture. This restriction has made it possible to adopt the "worst flaw" concept in establishing the critical conditions. Flat flaws with frictional resistance to sliding are considered. The ratios of expected strengths for various stress conditions are analyzed, in particular for biaxial states of stress. Biaxial rupture loci, intended as expectation loci, are drawn and compared with the deterministic ones. Although further information from experiments is require
