Typhus, also known as typhoid fever, is caused by Salmonella typhii bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food, drink, or rarely urine. The bacteria enters the intestines and attacks the body. Typhus is transmitted by fleas or mites that carry Rickettsia typhus bacteria and infect humans. Risk factors for typhus include poor sanitation, low food and personal hygiene standards, lack of clean water, inadequate toilets, contact with active cases, and lack of typhus immunization.
