What is Quantum Computing with Cold Ions about?

1) Cold trapped ions can be used to implement a quantum computer. Each ion represents a qubit with internal atomic states representing 0 and 1. 2) Quantum gates can be performed between any ions by coupling their motion using laser beams. This allows any two-qubit gate to be realized. 3) Decoherence is negligible in ion traps due to the extremely long lifetimes of internal atomic states and normal modes of motion. Readout of qubits can also be performed with high efficiency using quantum jumps.
