The General Assembly asked the ICJ for an advisory opinion on reservations to the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The ICJ ruled that a state can be considered a party to the Convention if its reservations are compatible with the object and purpose of the Convention, even if objected to by some states.
